For roof repairs in Abingdon, most jobs are on the estates that grew around the town from the 1970s: concrete tiles that have slipped or cracked, and ridge and hip tiles working loose as their mortar fails. The old town centre has its own roofs of clay tile, slate and stone. I'm Altin Lila, roofing since 2015, and every repair comes with a written guarantee of at least 5 years.
Abingdon's roofs and why they fail
Peachcroft and the other estates on the edges of Abingdon were mostly roofed in concrete interlocking tiles, many of them now 40 or 50 years old. Each tile hangs on its batten by a nib, and older roofs were often only nailed every few courses. When a nib cracks or a batten softens, the tile slides, and rain blown under the gap reaches the felt below. The ridge and hip tiles sit in mortar, and after decades of frost the bedding cracks and washes out.
The town centre is a different job. The Town Centre conservation area holds around 200 listed buildings, from the County Hall in the Market Place to the streets around St Helen's Church, with roofs in old clay tiles, slate and stone. Repairs there need matching materials, and work on a listed building may need the Vale of White Horse council's consent first. My heritage roofing page covers old roofs.
I cover the whole town and the villages around it, from Radley and Kennington to Drayton and Sutton Courtenay. Abingdon is about 7 miles south of Oxford, and I usually come and look the next day, free of charge.
The roof repairs I do in Abingdon
Slipped and cracked concrete tiles
A single slipped or cracked tile is a small job: the broken one comes out, and a tile of the same profile goes in and is fixed so it stays put.
If tiles are sliding all over one slope, the battens or nails behind them are failing, and patching won't hold. I'll tell you straight. The general method for re-tiling part of a roof is on my main roof repairs page.
Loose ridge and hip tiles
Loose ridge and hip tiles come off, the old mortar is cleaned away, and they go back on. Where most of the ridge has failed, I can replace the old mortar-bedded ridge with a dry-fixed one, held with clips and screws, so there is no mortar left for frost to crack.
Old tiles and slate in the town centre
On the older roofs near the Market Place and the Thames, a repair should match what is there: clay tiles with clay, slate with slate. Reclaimed tiles and slates of the right size often turn up, so a patch can be made to blend in.
If water is already coming through, start with roof leak repair, which covers tracing where it gets in.
Questions about roof repairs in Abingdon
Have you repaired roofs in Abingdon?
Not one I can point you to yet. The repair jobs I can show so far are in Oxford, in OX3 and OX4. Abingdon's estate roofs are the same concrete tiles and mortar ridges I repair there, and I cover the whole of Oxfordshire, so the visit and the quote are free here too.
Do I need consent to repair a roof in the old town?
Usually not for a like-for-like repair on an ordinary house. A listed building is different: work that changes its character, such as swapping old clay tiles for a different tile, can need listed building consent. If your house is listed, check with the Vale of White Horse council before work starts.
Tiles have blown off my roof. Can you come out tonight?
Yes, call me any time. For an emergency I'm usually with you in about an hour, with no call-out charge and nothing extra for evenings or weekends. I make the roof safe first to stop the water, then come back to do the proper repair.
