Questions about leadwork
What is lead flashing and why does it fail?
Lead flashing is the strip of sheet lead that seals the joint where a roof meets a wall, a chimney or a dormer. It fails for a handful of reasons: lengths fitted too long crack as they expand and contract in the sun, the mortar holding the top edge falls out of the brickwork, clips and wedges work loose, or the lead is stolen. The lead itself is rarely worn out.
Can lead flashing be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Often it can be repaired: re-pointing the joint, dressing lifted lead back down, or replacing one cracked length. When the lead is split along its run, worn thin or covered in old sealant and tape, replacing it is the better job. Mastic and flashing tape over cracked lead only buy time. I'll tell you which it needs once I've looked.
Do you replace lead valleys?
Yes, valleys are part of the leadwork I do, from clearing and rebuilding a blocked valley to relining one that has split. If the boards under an old valley have rotted, they need replacing before a new lining goes in. I can line a valley in lead sheet or a lead alternative.
