As a roofer covering Wantage, I look after roofs in King Alfred's market town and in Grove next door, from the old town houses round the Market Place to the estates that have grown up on the town's northern side. Wantage's roofs: an old market town and a fast-growing neighbour
Wantage is where Alfred the Great was born, and his statue still stands in the Market Place. The houses around it look Georgian, but many are older than their brick fronts: several were built in the 16th and 17th centuries and re-fronted in the early 1700s. Behind them are often steep pitches and clay tiles on old timber. The town centre is a conservation area and many of these buildings are listed, so the Vale of White Horse District Council has a say in changes to them. On roofs like these I bed and point in lime mortar, and where the old tiles are sound I put them back.
Grove is a different story. Its older estates are mostly post-war brick houses under concrete tiles, many with gutters, fascias and soffits near the end of their life. A new set of gutters and fascias is often the job, and where the ridge, tiles and felt are all wearing out together, a new roof is worth pricing next to the repair.
North-west of Wantage, the old RAF Grove airfield, where Wellington bombers flew in the Second World War, is becoming Wellington Gate, an estate of up to 2,500 homes. Young roofs still lose the odd ridge cap or tile in a storm: see roof repairs.
Wantage is about 15 miles south-west of Oxford. Coming out to look at your roof costs nothing.

Questions from Wantage
Do you cover Wantage and Grove?
Yes, I cover Wantage and Grove, including Wellington Gate, and the villages round them such as Letcombe Regis, Charlton, East Hendred and Ardington. All of Oxfordshire is in my area. Send a photo of the roof and your postcode by WhatsApp to 07306 077999, and I'll arrange a free visit.
Can you match the old clay tiles on a Wantage town house?
Often, yes. The best match is the house's own tiles, so on a repair or re-roof I take the old tiles off carefully and put back every one that's still sound. Where some are missing, reclaimed tiles of the same kind are usually the closest match. If the house is listed, check with the council before anything changes.
Why are the gutters on my older Grove house sagging?
Usually because the brackets have loosened or the fascia board behind them has gone soft. Once water sits in a sagging run, it overflows down the wall. If the fascia is sound, new brackets or a new gutter can be enough; if it's rotten, the fascia and soffit are worth replacing at the same time.
