Grandpont's terraces and what their roofs need
Grandpont is named after the medieval stone causeway that still lies under the Abingdon Road, but the houses mostly came in the late Victorian and Edwardian years, on the low ground south of Folly Bridge. They are two-storey brick terraces, many still with slate on the main roof and a chimney stack on each party wall.
Roofs like these show three faults again and again:
- **Slates slipping in runs.** After a century the nails rust through, so slates slide out across a whole slope, not one at a time. See my slate roofing page. - **Shared stacks.** One stack carries the flues of two houses, most of them long blocked off. Weathered pointing and cracked flaunching let water into both chimney breasts. See chimney repairs. - **Back additions.** The narrow rear wings, and the flat-roofed kitchens added since, meet the main roof in tight corners where flashings split and leaves collect.
Grandpont isn't one of Oxford City Council's conservation areas, so ordinary roof repairs here rarely need consent, though a listed house is another matter. Slopes shaded by the riverside trees and Grandpont Nature Park, on the old gasworks site, grow moss fast.
I cover every South Oxford street, and the visit to look at your roof is free.

Questions from Grandpont and South Oxford
Do you cover Grandpont and South Oxford?
Yes. Alto Roofing covers Grandpont, New Hinksey and the rest of South Oxford (OX1), and I'm Altin Lila, the roofer behind it. I've been roofing since 2015, and in Oxford as Alto Roofing since 2024. I usually come and look the next day, and the visit is free.
Which South Oxford streets do you cover?
All of them. I cover every street in Grandpont and New Hinksey, from Marlborough Road, Western Road and Chilswell Road to Lake Street and Vicarage Road. Beyond South Oxford I cover the whole of Oxfordshire. If you're unsure, WhatsApp me your postcode.
Do you work on the flat-roofed back extensions behind the terraces?
Yes, I work on all types of flat roof, including the ones over back extensions, kitchens and dormers. On a Grandpont terrace the weak point is usually where the flat roof meets the house wall or the main roof, not the middle of the deck. My flat roofing page explains rubber, fibreglass and felt.
