Witney's roofs: stone slate in town, brick and tile in Carterton
Witney grew rich on wool and blankets, with mills along the River Windrush, and its old centre still shows it. The High Street, the Market Square with its Buttercross, and Church Green sit in the Witney and Cogges conservation area, and many of the older houses are built of local limestone. The traditional West Oxfordshire roof on houses like these is stone slate: heavy stone slates split from local beds, the best known from Stonesfield, a few miles north-east of the town. They are laid in diminishing courses, large slates at the eaves and smaller ones towards the ridge.
A stone slate roof fails slowly: fixings rust or rot and slates slip one at a time. I work on stone slate, and on a re-roof I re-use slates that are still sound: see my heritage roofing page. Listed houses, and some work in the conservation area, may need West Oxfordshire District Council's consent first.
Carterton is a different story. It began soon after 1900 as a settlement of smallholdings and grew mostly from the 1960s onwards, next to RAF Brize Norton. So many of its houses are brick under concrete tiles, many with flat roofs over garages and extensions.
Witney is about 12 miles west of Oxford on the A40, with Carterton about 4 miles beyond. The visit is free.

Questions from Witney and Carterton
Do you cover Witney and Carterton?
Yes, I cover Witney and Carterton, and the villages around them, including Ducklington, Curbridge, Hailey and Brize Norton. They're all part of the Oxfordshire I work across. Send your postcode and a photo of the roof by WhatsApp to 07306 077999, or call, and I'll arrange a free visit to look at it.
Why has my old stone slate roof in Witney started to sag?
A slight sag is normal on many stone slate roofs, because the slates are heavy and the timbers have settled under them over a century or more. It matters when it changes: a new dip, slates slipping out of line, or daylight in the roof space. That usually points to failing fixings or battens, or a timber that needs attention.
What goes wrong with roofs on Carterton's newer houses?
Mostly the slow wear that brick-and-tile houses from the 1960s onwards share: mortar on the ridge cracks and lets ridge tiles work loose, the felt under the tiles turns brittle, and old felt flat roofs over garages and extensions split. When the whole roof is ageing together, a new roof is worth pricing alongside the repair.
