Flat roofing in Oxford with Alto Roofing covers the three systems you'll be offered for a flat roof: EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and torch-on felt. I fit new flat roofs and repair old ones on garages, extensions, dormers and porches across Oxfordshire. Which system suits depends on the roof's size and shape, whether anyone walks on it, and what's next to it.
EPDM, GRP and felt flat roofs compared
The three systems I fit, side by side. Lifespans are typical trade figures, not promises.
| EPDM rubber | GRP fibreglass | Felt / torch-on | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A synthetic rubber sheet | Glass-fibre mat set in resin | Layers of bitumen membrane |
| How it's laid | Glued down cold | Laminated on site, then cured | Each layer bonded with a gas torch |
| Walking on it | Occasional access only | Good, with an anti-slip topcoat | Occasional access only |
| Typical lifespan | Often 20 years or more | Often 25 years or more | Often about 20 years (modern torch-on) |
| Best for | Garages and plain extension roofs | Dormers, awkward shapes, walkable roofs | Like-for-like re-covering of felt roofs |
EPDM suits most garages and plain extensions. GRP suits dormers, roofs with lots of edges and any roof you'll walk on. Torch-on suits a like-for-like re-cover where felt has served well. The guide goes further, including when to swap felt for something else.

Send a photo or call
WhatsApp a photo of the flat roof to 07306 077999, or call. A shot from an upstairs window helps most.
Free visit
I usually come and look the next day, free, day or night, and check the covering, the edges and the ceiling below.
Repair or replace, and a quote
Repair or new roof, and which system: I explain why, then quote for free, in writing. You pay the price we agreed. If I find more work once the job has started, I talk it through with you first.
The work
For a new roof: strip, repair the deck, fit the insulation, then lay EPDM, GRP or torch-on with new trims and upstands. The old covering goes into a skip and is taken away.
Finished and guaranteed
Your guarantee comes in writing, by email: 20 years on a new flat roof, at least 5 years on a repair.
Questions about flat roofs
Which flat roof systems do you fit?
I fit all three main flat roof systems: EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass, and felt or torch-on. Which one suits depends on the roof's size and shape, whether it's walked on, and what's around it: beside a timber window, a cold-applied system avoids a flame near the frame.
Can a flat roof be repaired, or does it need replacing?
A flat roof can usually be repaired if the damage is in one place and the deck underneath is still firm and dry. Once it feels soft underfoot, holds water across most of its surface, or leaks in several spots, the deck has usually started to rot, and patching the top only buys time.
How long does a flat roof last?
It depends mostly on the system and on how well the edges were done. As a rough trade guide, old-style felt often lasted 10 to 20 years, while modern torch-on, EPDM and GRP can all last 20 years or more. Ponding water and blocked outlets shorten any of them.
