Roofer in Cowley and East Oxford
I fix mossy concrete tiles, loose ridges, chimneys and gutters on Cowley's semis and estate houses, from Florence Park to Blackbird Leys, and I've worked on roofs in OX4.
Roof, chimney and gutter jobs done in OX4, 2025
As a roofer in Cowley, I cover the whole of OX4, from the 1930s semis around Florence Park to Rose Hill, Littlemore and Blackbird Leys, and the Victorian terraces off the Cowley Road. Cowley's roofs: car-works estates, semis and terraces
Modern Cowley was built around the car works. When Morris Motors and Pressed Steel drew workers from South Wales and the North in the 1930s, builders put up whole estates for them. Florence Park is the best known: around 600 houses built by Frederick Moss in the early 1930s, so poorly that the tenants went on rent strike in 1934 over their condition. Rose Hill and Littlemore grew as council estates, and Blackbird Leys followed after the war.
On houses like these, concrete interlocking tiles and mortar-bedded ridges are common. Concrete holds moss, above all on north-facing slopes, and moss keeps the tiles wet and sheds into the gutters below. Ridge mortar cracks with frost until the ridge tiles rock.
Nearer the city, along the Cowley Road and Iffley Road, East Oxford has many Victorian terraces, often with slate roofs and stacks on the party walls. And there are older pockets: Temple Cowley, Iffley village and Littlemore are conservation areas, with older stone buildings among them. Where I work on stone like that, the bedding and pointing go back in lime mortar.
I cover all of Cowley and the rest of OX4. Visits are free, day or night.

Gutters choked with moss from the roof above, and rotten fascias and soffits replaced.

Questions from Cowley and East Oxford
Do you cover Cowley, Iffley, Rose Hill and Littlemore?
Yes, I cover all four, and the rest of OX4 including Temple Cowley, Florence Park and Blackbird Leys. I've already worked on roofs in OX4: a roof repair and clean, and a chimney cowl with guttering. Send a photo on WhatsApp and I'll come and look, usually the next day.
What roofing problems are common on Cowley houses?
On Cowley's semis and estate houses the common problems are moss on concrete tiles, cracked mortar ridges and tiles that slip once their fixings fail. Moss is the one people underestimate: it holds water on the roof and washes into the gutters, so a gutter that overflows in every storm often points to the roof above it.
Do you work on the Victorian terraces off the Cowley Road?
Yes. The terraces off the Cowley Road and Iffley Road are often slate, with chimney stacks on the party walls and narrow back additions. I work on slate roofs, chimneys and leadwork, so slipped slates, stack repairs and flashings at the back are all jobs I do. Some of those streets sit in the St Clement's and Iffley Road conservation area.
