As a roofer covering Abingdon, I work across the town and its villages: the old roofs of the town centre, the estates that spread out from it from the 1970s, and the flat roofs over their garages and extensions. Abingdon's roofs, from the Market Place to Peachcroft
Abingdon claims to be England's oldest continuously inhabited town, and its centre shows it. The Town Centre conservation area holds around 200 listed buildings, from the Grade I County Hall in the Market Place to the streets around St Helen's Church and the abbey buildings by the Thames. Roofs there mix old clay tiles, slate and stone, and work on a listed building or in the conservation area may need consent from the Vale of White Horse council first. My heritage roofing page covers old roofs.
Away from the centre the town is much newer. Estates spread out after the war, Peachcroft on the northern edge among them, built from the 1970s. Those houses often have concrete interlocking tiles, now 40 or 50 years old, and many have flat roofs over garages, porches and extensions. A felt flat roof of that age has usually been patched more than once: see my flat roofing page for what replaces it.
The villages around the town, from Radley and Kennington to Drayton and Sutton Courtenay, mix old cottages with newer houses, so the right repair varies from one roof to the next.
Abingdon is about 7 miles south of Oxford, straight down the Abingdon Road and the A34. The visit is free.

Questions from Abingdon
Do you cover Abingdon and the villages around it?
Yes, I cover Abingdon and the villages around it as part of the whole of Oxfordshire. That takes in Radley, Kennington, Drayton, Sutton Courtenay and Wootton as well as the town itself. To check before I come out, WhatsApp me your postcode and a photo of the roof on 07306 077999.
How far is Abingdon from you?
I'm based in Oxford, and Abingdon is about 7 miles south, a direct run down the Abingdon Road and the A34. I usually come and look the next day. The visit costs nothing, and I don't charge extra for evenings or weekends either.
Can you replace the felt flat roof on my garage or extension?
Yes. I work on all types of flat roof: EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and felt. Many garages and extensions on Abingdon's newer estates still carry felt laid decades ago, and once it has blistered, split or been patched several times, a new covering usually makes more sense than another patch. My guide to EPDM, GRP and felt compares the three.
