Bicester's roofs: a market town that kept growing
Bicester was a small market town for centuries. St Edburg's Church, founded perhaps as early as the 7th century, the Market Square and Sheep Street sit at its heart, and that old centre is a conservation area. Its older buildings mix stone, brick, clay tile and slate, and roof work there, or on any listed building, may need Cherwell District Council's consent first.
The 20th century changed the town. Military sites around Bicester, the airfield to the north among them, brought post-war housing, and the estates kept coming: Southwold, Langford Village and others, many of them brick houses under concrete interlocking tiles. A lot of those roofs are reaching the age where ridges need re-bedding and the felt under the tiles has gone brittle. Some need only a roof repair; others are ready for a new roof.
The newest Bicester is newer still: Kingsmere, to the south-west, has passed 2,000 homes, and Elmsbrook's first residents moved in during 2016, two years after Bicester became a garden town. A winter gale can still lift tiles on a roof of any age. If that happens, call me any time; my emergency roofer page explains what to do while you wait.
Bicester is about 11 miles north-east of Oxford. Whatever time you call, coming out to look at the roof is free.

Questions from Bicester
Do you cover Bicester?
Yes, I cover Bicester and its villages, from Kingsmere, Elmsbrook and Langford Village in the town to Launton and Chesterton outside it. All of Oxfordshire is in my area. WhatsApp your postcode and a photo of the roof to 07306 077999, or call, and I'll come out to look at no charge.
Do you work on the old buildings around Bicester's Market Square?
Yes, I work on old and period buildings, and the Market Square, Sheep Street and the streets around St Edburg's hold some of Bicester's oldest. On old stone and soft brick I use lime mortar for bedding and pointing, not hard cement. My heritage roofing page says more.
What wears out first on a concrete tile roof?
Usually the mortar and the felt, before the tiles themselves. Mortar-bedded ridges and verges crack and loosen over the decades, and old bitumen felt under the tiles goes brittle and tears, often first at the eaves. A loose ridge is a repair, and I can swap it for a dry-fixed one; when the felt has gone across the whole roof, re-roofing is often the longer-lasting answer.
