Marston: an old village and the suburb that reached it
Marston is really two places. Old Marston is the original village on low ground by the Cherwell, and its centre is a conservation area. Its best-known building, Cromwell's House on Mill Lane, is where the treaty for the surrender of Oxford was signed in 1646, at the end of the Civil War siege. The old houses there are varied, and a repair should match the roof it's on.
New Marston grew out along the Marston Road from St Clement's, and much of it is interwar and post-war semis with hipped or gabled tiled roofs. Northway, further north, is mostly council housing from the 1950s. Old Marston itself only came inside the city boundary in 1991.
On those 20th-century houses, many roofs still carry their first coverings. Concrete tiles, ridges bedded in mortar that has cracked, and felt that has gone brittle tend to wear out together. That's when a new roof is worth pricing next to a repair. Many semis also have a flat-roofed garage or kitchen extension: see flat roofing.
For Headington, Barton and Risinghurst, the rest of OX3, see my Headington page.
Marston is inside the city boundary, so a planned job usually gets a visit the next day, at no charge.

Questions from Marston
Do you cover Marston and Old Marston?
Yes, I cover Marston and Old Marston, along with New Marston, Northway and the houses along the Marston Road. They're all in OX3, a postcode district where I've done roofing jobs before. The first visit is free and usually the next day; if you'd rather start with a photo, WhatsApp it to 07306 077999.
Can you match the tiles when only my half of a semi is re-roofed?
Often, but not always exactly. Many concrete tiles laid on interwar and 1950s semis are no longer made in the same profile or colour, so a new roof can look different from next door's. Where the old tiles are in good condition I re-use them. Otherwise the closest tile still made is the usual answer, and it is worth seeing a sample before work starts.
Should I replace a cracked mortar ridge with a dry ridge?
It's worth considering. On a repair I can replace an old mortar-bedded ridge with a dry-fixed one, which is screwed or clipped down instead of relying on mortar, so there's no bedding left to crack and wash out. On older village houses a mortar ridge may suit the building better, so I'd look at the roof first.
