North Oxford's big houses and what their roofs need
Much of North Oxford went up in the second half of the 19th century, a lot of it on farmland either side of the Banbury and Woodstock Roads that St John's College owned. The result is street after street of large brick houses, many three storeys high with attics. Summertown, once a separate village, filled in to the north, and the 1930s added Cutteslowe and Sunnymead beyond it.
Roofs on the big houses are rarely one simple slope. Steep pitches in slate or clay tiles meet at valleys, hips and gables; bays and dormers carry small lead roofs; and stacks rise from several walls. The faults tend to be at the joints: a lead valley that has split, a flashing pulled away from a stack, or slates sliding where their nails have rusted. My leadwork page covers the lead.
The North Oxford Victorian Suburb conservation area runs from St Giles up to roads such as Staverton Road and Belbroughton Road, and Park Town sits inside it. Some houses are listed as well. On those roofs repairs should match what's there, and changing a material may need Oxford City Council's consent first. My heritage roofing page explains how I approach old roofs.
Summertown is inside Oxford, so I usually come and look the next day. In an emergency I'm usually with you in about an hour.

Questions from Summertown and North Oxford
Do you cover Summertown and North Oxford?
Yes, I cover Summertown and the whole of North Oxford, from Park Town and the streets off the Banbury Road up to Wolvercote, Cutteslowe and Sunnymead. A visit to look at the roof costs nothing, and it's usually the day after you get in touch. You can WhatsApp a photo to 07306 077999 first.
How do you reach the roof of a tall three-storey house?
With scaffolding, which I arrange and include in the quote. Many North Oxford houses have three storeys plus an attic, steep slopes and stacks well above the ridge, so a ladder is no safe way to work on most of the roof.
Who arranges roof repairs on a house split into flats?
Usually the freeholder or the management company, because the roof is normally shared and not part of any one flat. Plenty of large North Oxford houses have been divided into flats, so check your lease first. I work for landlords, letting agents and businesses as well as homeowners, and I can invoice the landlord or agent directly.
