Roofer in Jericho
I cover Jericho, Walton Manor and Osney: slate roofs on small terraces, the chimney stacks neighbours share, and the scaffolding its narrow streets need.
£2 million public liability insurance
As a roofer covering Jericho, I work on the slate-roofed terraces between Walton Street and the Oxford Canal, on their shared chimney stacks and on the small roofs over their back additions. Most of these roofs are well over a century old, so a careful repair is often the right answer before a new roof. I'm Altin Lila, roofing since 2015, and my written quotes are free.

Jericho's terraces: one roof, several houses
Jericho grew up from the mid-1820s, when the University Press moved to Walton Street and builders began putting up terraces for people working at the Press and the ironworks by the canal. Building went on street by street until the 1880s, so most houses are small two-storey brick terraces, many opening straight onto the pavement, and many still roofed in slate.
A terrace roof is one long run across several houses, and a fault rarely stops at the boundary. Water from a slipped slate above next door can run down the slope and come through your ceiling, and a stack on the party wall belongs to the houses on both sides. A repair here often starts with a word with the neighbours. Where the chimney is the problem, see my chimney repairs page.
Jericho is a conservation area, and Oxford City Council's Article 4 direction there, in force since 2011, means changing the roofing material needs planning permission. Slate for slate is normally fine; slate for concrete tiles needs the council's say first. My guide to listed building roof repairs covers the rules. Walton Manor to the north and Osney Town across the river are conservation areas of their own.
Jericho is in central Oxford, so I usually come and look the next day, and the visit costs nothing.
Roofing work I cover in Jericho
Slate roofing
Refixing slipped slates on terrace roofs, or re-slating a slope in matching slate the conservation area expects.
Roof repairs
Small repairs on small roofs: a run of slates, a cracked ridge, or the joint above a back addition.
Chimney repairs
Party-wall stacks repointed, re-flaunched and given new lead flashings, ideally with both owners agreed first.
Leadwork and flashing
New lead where a back addition's roof meets the house wall, the joint terraces most often leak at.
Questions from Jericho
Do you work on Jericho's terraced houses?
Yes, I work on Jericho's terraced houses: their slate roofs, the chimney stacks on the party walls, and the roofs over the back additions. On old brick I point with lime mortar, and on a re-slate I re-use the old slates if they're sound. I cover Walton Manor and Osney too.
Who pays to repair a chimney stack shared with next door?
Usually both owners share the cost, because a stack on the party wall normally belongs to the two houses together. It's worth agreeing it with your neighbour before work starts, and the Party Wall Act may apply to some work on the stack. I can look at it and give you both one written quote, free.
Can scaffolding go up on Jericho's narrow streets?
Yes, with planning. I arrange the scaffolding and it's included in the quote. Where it has to stand on the pavement, a licence from Oxfordshire County Council, the highway authority, is normally needed first. My scaffolder applies for it, and the cost is included in the quote.
